I am sitting on a terrace among the rolling hills of Empordà, where the salty sea breeze meets the scent of red earth, holding a handful of walnuts in my palm. This moment is not merely part of my morning ritual; it is the very essence of Mediterranean Therapy®. Years ago, when I began to immerse myself in the respect for local ingredients, I understood that the secret of Catalan cuisine lies not in complexity, but in the molecular purity of its components. In this article, I will share three “superpowers” that are essential for the regeneration of both body and soul.

The Gold of Priorat: Walnuts (Nueces)

In Catalonia, walnuts are more than a simple snack. Nuts grown in Priorat and Montsant mature under exceptional microclimatic conditions, resulting in remarkably high Omega-3 concentrations. From a scientific perspective, walnuts are among the most effective neuroprotective foods: they support cognitive function and help reduce systemic inflammation.

In our kitchen, walnuts act as a “bridge” between flavors: a handful of freshly cracked kernels over a salad, or mixed with a little local honey, brings not only texture but also sustained mental clarity throughout the day.

The Essence of Sunlight: Tomato (Tomàquet)

Anyone who has tasted sun-ripened tomatoes from Maresme knows that true flavor does not compromise. One of Catalonia’s most beautiful traditions is Pa amb tomàquet (bread rubbed with tomato), often made with tomàquet de penjar — a variety traditionally stored hanging in clusters.

"The Mediterranean way of living is not about owning luxury objects, but about the attention with which we place even the simplest tomato on our plate."

This fruit is one of the richest sources of lycopene, which becomes most bioavailable through gentle cooking or contact with olive oil. This powerful antioxidant protects our cells from oxidative stress and supports radiant skin — a true symbiosis of inner and outer beauty.

The Sea’s Gift: Oily Fish and the Treasures of Palamós

Along the Costa Brava, especially around Palamós and L’Escala, fishing is not an industry but an art form. Oily fish (peix blau), such as sardines and anchovies, are true “superfoods of the sea.” They are rich in vitamin D and clean protein, both essential for optimal immune and cardiovascular function.

In my kitchen, I keep fish nearly untouched: a pinch of coarse sea salt, a drop of premium olive oil, and I let the pure flavor of the sea speak for itself.

Sára’s Everyday Guidance

  1. Ritual of quality: Never buy pre-ground or pre-chopped packaged walnuts. Freshly cracked nuts contain incomparable aromatic oils and higher nutritional value.
  2. Activate lycopene: Always pair tomatoes with a little extra virgin olive oil — fatty acids help antioxidant absorption.
  3. Seasonality first: Visit local markets where the vendor knows the name of the fish and the garden the vegetables came from.

Quality living is not about quantity, but about the pure moments we experience around our table.
